It's already been three years since God of War Ragnarök released, if you can believe it – and rumours are beginning to sprout about the next God of War game.

Considering the massive success of the series since its reboot in 2018, it's no surprise that the pressure is on for Sony Santa Monica to nail it for a third game in a row.

So, what do we actually know about the next God of War?

We'll go through all the rumours to explain what you need to know.

New God of War game: Release date speculation and rumours explained

Judging by what little we know at the moment (and we want to make clear that what we know is not a lot), we predict that the next God of War game will release in 2026.

Initially, there were rumours about Sony Santa Monica preparing to release the game in 2025, although according to industry insider Jeff Grubb on his Game Mess YouTube channel, it has been pushed back to 2026.

Considering we're already more than halfway through 2025 and have yet to hear any confirmation of the game's existence, we think that a potential 2026 release date is probably more likely.

As for the contents of the game itself, the rumour mill is even more confusing.

The biggest piece of news, and the one we believe is the most likely to be true, is that the series is making a return to Greece – the setting of the original series. This was, of course, also revealed by Jeff Grubb.

In a Bluesky post, he notes that this is not a remaster of the original series, but will be a "new side-story project".

This has been backed up by Tom Henderson, who reported back in February 2025 on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast that the series was returning to Greece with "a younger Kratos".

Other rumours have also circulated across social media that the game will not feature Kratos, and focusing instead on a new protagonist, Kratos's brother Deimos.

Further rumours have claimed that the game won't be a fully 3D game like the rest of the series, but will instead be a kind of 2.5D spin-off that incorporates metroidvania elements.

However, we haven't seen any credible sources for the Deimos and 2.5D rumours, so for the moment, we think you can safely dismiss them.
