A new still has been released for upcoming boxing biopic Christy – and it's safe to say that star Sydney Sweeney looks fairly unrecognisable in the title role.

The image – which was released alongside an announcement that the film will debut at this year's Toronto International Film Festival in September – shows Sweeney in the ring, wearing boxing gloves and a white mouth guard and sporting a short brown wig.

The film sees Sweeney take on boxing legend Christy Martin, who rose to fame as the first breakout star of US female boxing in the 1990s.

It will explore both her ascent to stardom and the attempted murder of her by her husband in 2010, with Ben Foster, Merritt Wever and Katy O'Brian among the supporting cast.

Sweeney's physical transformation for the role had previously been outlined by director David Michôd, who explained in an interview with W Magazine that the Euphoria star had gained more than 30 pounds to play the athlete.

"I loved it," Sweeney told the same publication of training for the film. "I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating.

"I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kick-boxed midday for about two hours and then weight-trained again at night for an hour."

She added: "My body was completely different. I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. It was crazy! I was like, 'Oh my god.' But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong."

Sweeney had previously shared some behind-the-scenes snaps of her in costume while shooting the film last year, describing Martin as "an incredible woman" and a "true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring".

She continued: "Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honoured to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all."
