Joaquin Phoenix returns to the role that won him an Oscar in this brooding sequel. Former stand-up comic Arthur Fleck, aka the "Joker", is now an inmate at Arkham Asylum, where he's awaiting trial for five murders. Joining a music class, he meets fellow prisoner Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), aka DC villainess Harley Quinn, who quickly establishes she's a fan. "We're gonna build a mountain," she promises him. Less intense than its predecessor, this is a bizarre but engaging mix of Gotham psychodrama, courtroom melodrama and Hollywood musical. Returning director Todd Phillips backs away from the first film's incendiary violence, instead delivering more of a twisted romance. Phoenix and Gaga make ideal sparring partners, with Phoenix's maudlin performance impressively versatile. While the film lacks the rage-fuelled spark of Joker, it is still a compelling tale that works hard to reinvent the comic-book movie.
