Summary

The fifth entry in the meta horror franchise, and the first without director Wes Craven, brings the series full circle with a "requel" (reboot-slash-sequel) that embraces the past while setting out its own bold new vision. Twenty-five years after the events of the first movie, Ghostface is back terrorising a fresh set of Woodsboro teens. When her sister is attacked, troubled Sam (Melissa Barrera) attempts to unmask the killer, while also concealing her personal link to past tragedies. As the bodies pile up, she reaches out to one-time sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) for help, which also prompts perennial survivors Sidney (Neve Campbell) and Gale (Courteney Cox) into action. Setting a darker, grittier tone than previous films, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) co-ordinate the blood-soaked mayhem with a clear affection for the franchise (the film is dedicated to Craven, who died in 2015). This time, the self-referential jokes take a stab at toxic fandom, "elevated horror" and (wink-wink) franchises that never know when to quit. There's no escaping the sense that much of this ground has been covered before (and, arguably, more successfully), but Scream takes a few calculated risks that pay off, and treats its bruised legacy characters with appropriate love and care. Made by Scream fans for Scream fans, this is an entertaining continuation that proves there's life yet in the franchise... but only just.
