Summary

An artificially intelligent robot learns to adapt to the natural world in this inspired animation. Directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon), it begins with ROZZUM 7134 (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o), or "Roz" for short, washed up on an island. Learning to cope with hostile surroundings, this metallic being soon encounters a baby goose, Brightbill (Kit Connor). Joined by a wily fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal), Roz takes it upon herself to help this runt learn to eat, swim and migrate. Alongside the excellent Nyong'o, a splendid support cast (Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu and Matt Berry, hilarious as a beaver named Paddler) lend real texture to this jaunty adventure. With Sanders taking inspiration from The Iron Giant and the work of Japanese animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki, the result is an enjoyable look at the pleasures and perils of parenthood. A pity the final third gets too action-oriented, as Sanders looks to thrill younger viewers. Otherwise, this is a beautifully observed film.
