Summary
Black comedy horror starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore. A group of teenagers targeted by an obsessive horror fanatic pays the ultimate price for failing to answer his film-trivia questions.

"What's your favourite scary movie?" taunts a voice on the phone at the start of this exceptional and trendsetting 1990s horror movie. Chances are that, after watching, your answer will be: Scream. Neve Campbell is likeably no-nonsense as the teenager who finds herself at the heart of the mystery of who is killing people in her small California town. Courteney Cox is wickedly funny as the steely reporter who'll do anything for an exclusive, while the rest of the young cast bring black humour aplenty (particularly Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy). Effortlessly updating tired genre conventions with razor-sharp dialogue, a well-defined set of characters, and a healthy dollop of blood, it's easy to see why this is the film that changed the face of horror in the 90s. Director Wes Craven had already dipped a toe in self-referential horror two years previously with New Nightmare, and he is perfect for this, his elegant visuals adding weight to Kevin Williamson's smart, quip-tastic script. With its genuinely bone-chilling opening and utterly fresh take on the genre, Scream is nothing short of a modern classic.
