Twilight director to film live action Beauty and the Beast

Bill Condon, who directed The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn parts 1 and 2, will be at the helm of Disney's new live action Beauty and the Beast movie

Disney are keeping with the trend for turning animated tales into live action movies – think Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland, Oz the Great and Powerful, Snow White and the Huntsman and the upcoming Cinderella and Jungle Book films – and remaking classic story Beauty and the Beast.

Disney 1991 version of the story, voiced by Paige O’Hara and Robby Benson, is still the 40th highest grossing animated film of all time, beating Toy Story, Ice Age and Happy Feet.

Now the fairytale, following book-smart Belle and her relationship with the cursed Beast who keeps her locked in his enchanted castle, will be transformed into a live-action film with the help of Bill Condon.

Condon’s cinematic CV includes The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn parts 1 and 2, Dreamgirls and The Fifth Estate

No one else is attached to the project yet. And as for who will play Belle and her beastly beau, only time will tell. Though do feel free to speculate in the comments box below. (We’re thinking Twilight’s Robert Pattinson might be a good match for the beast, or perhaps Benicio del Toro if a swarthier star is called for…)
