When Doctor Who returns to our screens for series seven this autumn it's a pretty safe bet that die-hard fans around the country will be turning on the TV to watch it with a flick of their very own Sonic Screwdrivers...

Available from the end of August, the official Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control is a metal replica of the Mark VII device used by Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and will allow those who possess it to manipulate their TVs, Blu-ray players and pretty much any remote-controlled electronic device, with a point and a flick or a twist.

Made by the same company that brought Harry Potter fans a television-controlling magic wand, the Sonic Screwdriver features a green flashing tip, an FX mode incorporating vintage Doctor Who sound effects, and uses a series of 13 gestures, such as rotating, flicking or tapping to control devices.

A triple memory bank means it can switch between three devices at any one time, while a three-digit PIN will stop rogue Time Lords using it for evil (ie, changing channels while Doctor Who is on).

Officially licensed by BBC Worldwide, the Sonic Screwdiver remote control will be available from Firebox.com and Forbidden Planet from Friday 31 August 2012.
