Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Brian De Palma harks back to his 1980s back catalogue here, but he can't ignite this remake of director Alain Corneau's final film, Love Crime. Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) and Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) slip into the roles of the backstabbing ad agency boss and her ambitious protégé, played by Kristin Scott Thomas and Ludivine Sagnier in the 2010 original. Rapace's Isabelle soon realises all is not fair in love and corporate war when McAdams's manipulative Christine not only steals her ideas but also humiliates her, plunging the pair into a wicked web of jealousy, deceit and murder. McAdams is suitably bitchy but can't match the porcelain ice-queen qualities that made Scott Thomas so convincing. De Palma eventually injects some giallo style (à la Dressed to Kill) but one distinctive split-screen scene and a lush score from composer collaborator Pino Donaggio cannot hide the fact it's a pale and not especially passionate echo of the director's 80s heyday.
