Airport Live

Series 1 - Episode 1

These four nightly live shows presume that anyone who’s been through Heathrow will want to know what goes on behind the scenes, rather than just wishing fervently they could board an aircraft and get the hell out.

Dan Snow, Dallas Campbell and Anita Rani have been given, yes, you’ve guessed it “unprecedented access” (will access ever be precedented in our lifetime, I wonder?) airside at the world’s busiest airport. Snow sees if he’s got what it takes to be an air traffic controller, Campbell takes the controls of a flight simulator landing an A380, and Rani will explore how Heathrow deals with very bad weather.

About this programme

1/4. New series. Dan Snow, Dallas Campbell and Anita Rani go behind the scenes at Heathrow, which has more than 200,000 passengers passing through it each day, witnessing air-traffic control in action and examining the science and logistics behind the flights. In the first episode, Dan finds out how Heathrow went from a row of tents to one of the world's busiest airports, Anita discovers how weather affects the airport each day, and Dallas looks at the first-class compartment of the A380, the world's largest passenger jet. Continues tomorrow.
