Until now I’d assumed that the word halal referred only to the way that meat is butchered to satisfy Islamic laws. But as Navid Akhtar explains in this revealing documentary, the word halal can apply to many things and is now used of hair products, tea-bags, perfume, financial services and holidays, even, as a way to indicate to consumers that the methods involved in the production of the goods are compatible with Muslim beliefs and principles.
And with a growing demographic trend of affluent and educated Muslims who may be interested in such products, we can expect the word halal to crop up more frequently in global commerce in the years to come.
About this programme
Journalist Navid Akhtar examines the global rise of halal products and services, from food and cosmetics to fashion and tourism. He investigates whether the burgeoning industry is driven by the desire for profit or a wish to support Muslim values, and how some countries are reaping the rewards of the consumer trend.
