Episode 1: Deadhead - Part One

Summary

Part one of two. Nikki is called in when a private jet crashes in a forest outside London, and finds herself forced to be the bearer of bad news when she learns that the casualties include a former US ambassador who is also an old friend of Matt's. Meanwhile, Thomas investigates the suspicious suicide of a successful businessman, and uncovers an unexpected connection to the plane crash - which suggests the two cases are linked, and that the plane may have been sabotaged as part of a co-ordinated attack

Review

The forensic procedural rolls back for series 23 with a two-parter that is a fugue on men’s mental health. No, “fugue” is too strong, it suggests something very structured, whereas a Silent Witness two-parter is more like following a ball rolling for an hour, then the next night following it some more, until at the end everyone says, “Oh, so that’s where it ended up…” and goes to bed.

But you don’t reach series 23 by messing with a formula, so things at the pathology lab are much the same. Nikki (Emilia Fox) is still with her boyfriend, Matt (Michael Landes), though all is not well. She keeps ducking out of meetings to take calls from him, when she should really be concentrating on the case in hand, which involves a private jet that has crashed with a former US ambassador on board.

Questions for our pathologists include why it followed such a curious flight path. Did someone try to crash the plane deliberately, then panic?
