Summary

Leah and her sister Chantrelle are on a mission to escort their friend Hosanna from Jamaica to Britain to potentially marry their brother Aston. Leah hopes to find work quickly in Aston's home town of Dudley, while Chantrelle has accepted a job as a live-in nanny near London, but everything falls into disarray upon their arrival. Drama inspired by Lenny Henry's mother's journey to Britain in the late 1950s, starring Rochelle Neil and Saffron Coomber

Review

David Brown

This 1950s-set drama about three women arriving in the UK from Jamaica ought to be a snapshot from a bygone time when attitudes towards immigration were noxious. But with the issue now being weaponised once again, Lenny Henry’s heartfelt chronicle of the period ends up feeling rather pertinent.

On the surface at least, the six-part series shares some thematic similarities with BBC One’s Ten Pound Poms, thanks to a narrative about the realities of life in a new country failing to meet expectations, but this story is very much about the Windrush generation and the prejudice it encountered from the moment that passports were stamped. However, its powerful message is delivered lightly and with Henry’s natural comic sensibilities intact.

To hear more about the development of Three Little Birds, catch Lenny Henry: One of a Kind (Thursday, 9pm, ITV1) in which its writer reveals his inspirations.
