Episode 1: Episode 1

Summary

Commissioner Herville is found dead in a Chinese restaurant in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, and Gilou must break the news to Laure, who is being treated in a police rehabilitation centre. Gilou, now the head of the unit, must investigate with a new partner, fresh out of training. The return of the French detective drama, starring Caroline Proust, Gregory Fitoussi, Philippe Duclos and Thierry Godard

Review

Alison Graham

When we last saw Paris police commander Laure Berthaud she was running from everything she held most dear – her lover/colleague Gilou who was eagerly clutching a giant soft-toy panda, and her tiny baby Romy. It was supposed to have been a happy ending, the three of them together, en famille. But this is Spiral, and smiles are few.

As series seven of this terrifically visceral drama opens, Laure (Caroline Proust) is being treated for depression while Gilou (Thierry Godard) is the boss, replacing his former lover as the leader of a grubby band of slightly, sometimes dangerously, wild cops.

But a murder hits very close to home and everyone regroups. As Spiral fans will know there’s no time to take a breath as plots skitter and roll – we see former prosecutor Joséphine Karlsson having a terrible time in prison, and decent magistrate Roban once more up against his less liberal colleagues.
