Terry Staunton

Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as the mother of a terminally ill teenage girl (the titular Tuesday) in this muddled meditation on mortality, which is by turns sensitive and silly. As emotions run riot, parent and child are visited by a talking, size-shifting macaw to help them prepare for the inevitable, allowing them to find closure in the process. It's undoubtedly a heavy subject matter with thought-provoking points to make, but undercutting the seriousness of the situation with a gruff-voiced bird rendered via not always convincing CGI doesn't do the film many favours. Louis-Dreyfus showed in Seinfeld and Veep that she is a phenomenally gifted comic actor, but she also impresses here in a role that demands more substance and intensity. However, the true revelation is Lola Petticrew as the pragmatic and wise-beyond-her-years Tuesday, and her layered performance might persuade viewers to (partly, at least) forgive the film's more ham-fisted attempts to put a redemptive spin on tragedy.
