Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In 2019, Sonic the Hedgehog defied expectations to deliver as a surprisingly entertaining adaptation of the iconic computer game. Much of its appeal lay in Jim Carrey's off-the-charts energy as villain Dr Robotnik and, during the opening minutes of this sequel, he's on fine form again - never has mushroom coffee been spat out with such gusto. Unfortunately it's downhill from there as Robotnik returns with a tedious revenge mission against Sonic (Ben Schwartz). This time, the speedy blue hedgehog teams with chirpy fox Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) to defeat the doctor and new baddie Knuckles (voiced with great dignity, somehow, by Idris Elba). Meanwhile, Sonic's friend Tom (James Marsden) is sent to Hawaii for a subplot that seems drafted in from another movie. "Did your butt just turn into a helicopter?" Sonic asks Tails at one point, which is as witty as the script gets. It's not all bad, though, and fans of the games may still enjoy the homage-filled action sequences.
