Summary

Portmanteau comedy drama from director Wes Anderson. Following the death of its editor, a respected American magazine publishes one final issue, featuring a selection of classic articles from the town of Ennui-sur-Blasé: a cycling tour of Ennui; a profile of an artist serving time for murder; a report on the student-led "Chessboard Revolution"; and an anecdote about the dining habits of the local police commissioner.

Terry Staunton

The offices and staff of a fictional 1960s magazine provide the setting for director Wes Anderson's stylish anthology, which bears all the visually arresting hallmarks and lush colour palettes of his previous films. After the death from a heart attack of its editor, Arthur Howitzer Jr (Bill Murray), the publication gears up for a final issue, with Howitzer's obituary to be featured among the articles. From this jumping-off point, Anderson delivers a typically quirky portmanteau of slightly larger-than-life narratives populated by incarcerated killers, student protesters, food critics and cycling enthusiasts. Although the film's episodic structure may frustrate viewers wishing specific stories were given more screen time, there's an abundance of warmth and charm in its cavalcade of oddballs. Anderson regulars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman all put in fine work, but top plaudits go to Timothée Chalamet as a young revolutionary and Frances McDormand as the principled reporter who falls under his spell.
