Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This adaptation of Jane Austen's final novel rips up the Austen rule book and plays out like a period version of the BBC's Fleabag. When young Englishwoman Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) falls for Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), she is persuaded by her family to discontinue the relationship over concerns regarding his low ranking. Eight years later, though, she still pines for him, and when her father's financial problems force the Elliots to relocate, Wentworth is thrust back into Anne's life. Fans of more traditional costume dramas should approach with caution, as director Carrie Cracknell delivers a very different, overtly feminist take on the 1817 book. Johnson's Anne is a far cry from the original protagonist - her character directs smirks and raised eyebrows at the camera, while armed with acerbic humour and modern-day vernacular (the words "ex" and "self-care" are bandied about). However, those looking for a revolutionary and entirely charming new interpretation of the material won't want to miss out.
