Everly director Joe Lynch's spiky satire pitches in the same gore park as The Belko Experiment - workers incarcerated in a locked-down office block run murderously amok - only here it's a rage-inducing, inhibition-denuding virus that's the cause rather than a nefarious game of survival of the fittest. No stranger to slice-and-dice bloodletting after his stint on The Walking Dead, likeable Steven Yeun takes the lead here as a put-upon pen-pusher whose denial of financial aid to a disgruntled client (Samara Weaving) is just the beginning of a very bad day. Yeun and Weaving (who's garnered her own genre kudos from Netflix release The Babysitter and 2019's Ready or Not) attack their roles with ghoulish gusto, especially when the increasingly tetchy twosome team up to get to the top floor and salvation. All this, while avoiding the vile depredations of corporate grotesques with nicknames like the Siren, the Bull and the Reaper, played to the hilt by Caroline Chikezie, André Eriksen and Dallas Roberts. It may be a less edgy affair than Belko, but tongue-in-cheek carnage and a committed cast make Mayhem an insanely entertaining experience.
