Once billed as the long-awaited face-off between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, this epic crime saga from director Michael Mann is far more than marketing gimmickry - it's the ultimate game of cops and robbers. Set against a glistening Los Angeles cityscape, the drama puts Pacino's homicide lieutenant on a collision course with De Niro's master thief, leading to bank robberies and shootouts that remain high-water marks for both crime and action cinema. The two leads are bound by an uneasy mutual respect from opposite sides of the law, culminating in a legendary meeting over coffee that shows off their nicely contrasting performances: Pacino flamboyant and voluble, De Niro rivetingly ruthless. A galaxy of character actors adds texture from the fringes: Val Kilmer as the criminal gang's hopelessly romantic second in command; Jon Voight as their money launderer; and Tom Sizemore's bank robber who can't quit because "the action is the juice." Throughout a perfectly controlled 170 minutes, Mann displays his eye for authenticity and spectacle alongside a keen sense of character and cool. With Christopher Nolan among the many film-makers to cite Heat as an inspiration, it enjoys the enviable legacy of being always admired, often imitated, but never bettered.
