The director adopts a broader suspense canvas than he'd utilised before (the action and slow-motion sequences remain the best he's ever crafted), and turns in a gorgeous horror adventure about two teenagers with psychic powers who become pawns in the machinations of spy factions. Kirk Douglas stars as the anguished father who's forced to go to extreme lengths to extract his son from the clutches of John Cassavetes's evil agent. Ingeniously plotted, extravagantly staged and beautifully balanced between apocalyptic goriness and full-blooded pyrotechnic imagery, this nail-biting shocker is De Palma's most underrated movie.
