Summary

Surreal, sassy and very, very pink, this infectious take on the world's most famous doll is a wildly inventive ride. Margot Robbie plays the original Barbie, who parties every day in her Dreamhouse in Barbieland with all the other Barbies. When a malfunction forces her to visit the real world, she discovers that the feminism she believed Barbie to have inspired is, in fact, a myth. Joining her is beau Ken (Ryan Gosling, very buff), who is soon educated about the patriarchy. Directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Barbie is filled with charming musical numbers, comic cameos and striking design. It's also a blockbuster that smuggles in conversations about body image, female empowerment and the battle of the sexes. Alongside the perfectly cast Robbie and Gosling, Will Ferrell shines as the CEO of Mattel, and Kate McKinnon is excellent as a mangled "Weird Barbie". Narrated by Helen Mirren - who does plenty of fourth-wall-breaking, even referencing the casting of Robbie - this is a delightfully barmy film that's positively bursting with imagination.
