Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Magic is in plentiful supply in Disney's hugely charming animated adventure, which introduces us to the marvellous Madrigals, the inhabitants of an enchanted, mountain-flanked house in Colombia. Stephanie Beatriz (of TV's Brooklyn Nine-Nine) voices Mirabel, who is the only member of the large clan without special powers - her sister Luisa (Jessica Darrow), for example, is freakishly strong. However, when their magical sanctuary is threatened, it's down to Mirabel to finally figure out her own gift. There's plenty of peril, although, rather than taking its protagonist on a quest, Encanto stays close to home, keeping the whole, diverse and beautifully expressive Madrigal brood in play. There's so much visual delight on offer, it's almost impossible to take it all in, while the fabulous songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda simply add to the fun.
