What do you do when a flying saucer crashes into your back yard and a naked alien crawls out of the wreckage? If you're 79-year-old widower Milton (Ben Kingsley), you simply carry on with your life as usual. That's the premise of this gentle comedy, which is essentially a reverse version of ET that ponders how elderly folk rather than children would deal with an alien. Milton invites the visitor, Jules (Jude Quon), into his home, and he's eventually joined by friends Sandy (Harriet Harris, hilarious) and Joyce (Jane Curtin, perfect). Meanwhile, Milton's daughter Denise (Zoë Winters) worries that her dad is going senile - why else would he tell the supermarket cashier that he's "buying apples for an alien"? Despite telling a story we've seen many times before, Jules feels remarkably fresh. With its laid-back pacing, sweet emotional core and the occasional surprise, it's an unexpected delight.
