Matt Smith is to star in a new Doctor Who story, Death Is the Only Answer - written by the pupils of Oakley CE Junior School in Basingstoke. Doctor Who Confidential and BBC Learning ran a contest for upper primary schools to write a special episode.
"I loved the shortlisted scripts," said Steven Moffat. "There was so much skill and enthusiasm on display that it was actually genuinely, very, very difficult to judge."
Matt Smith said of the winning script: "It was so clever, we were all just bowled over, it was a brilliant script."
Moffat added: "I come from a family of teachers, I was a teacher, my father's a teacher, my sister's a teacher. We go back teacher generations so it's hard-wired for me to want the approval of teachers. So I'm very, very thrilled that it's gone down so well with the schools that took part."
A download pack with instructions and videos from the Doctor Who cast was prepared for schools and almost 300,000 copies were downloaded. Schools had to submit three-minute scripts that feature Matt Smith, a new human enemy of their own devising, and one from four previous monsters on the show: Ood, Judoon, Cyberman or Weeping Angel.
No details of what the winning school picked have been revealed, but the story of the contest will be shown in Doctor Who Confidential in the weeks leading up to the screening of the episode itself on Saturday 1 October.
