A German soldier tries to determine if the Dutch resistance has planted a spy to infiltrate the home of Kaiser Wilhelm in Holland during the onset of the Second World War, but falls for a young Jewish-Dutch woman during his investigation. Christopher Plummer stars here as the deposed German Kaiser, who in 1940 is living a life of exile in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Jai Courtney plays the officer assigned to head his protection squad and Lily James is the Dutch-Jewish housemaid who catches Courtney's eye. It's all in English, so accents abound. Plummer and Janet McTeer, as the Kaiser's wife, bring their customary class to proceedings. But they can't save a tepid mishmash that seems undecided whether it's wartime romance, spy drama or fanciful political fable, so opts to be an uneasy hybrid of all three.
