Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This bittersweet drama tells the story of a man who is living a lie. The man is Nolan Mack (Robin Williams), a kind, mild-mannered loan manager who works at a small bank. He lives with his wife, Joy (Kathy Baker), and he is on the verge of a big promotion, but none of this seems to make him happy. It soon becomes clear that Nolan is gay, and that he has been hiding this secret for a very long time. Everything changes, however, when he encounters a young male prostitute (Roberto Aguire), and they begin a relationship of sorts. From here, the story plays out in a fairly predictable manner, but Williams ensures that it is engaging throughout. In his final dramatic role, the actor - who took his own life not long after its US release - delivers a performance that is filled with sadness and regret. As a result, the film is quietly heartbreaking.
