Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Effectively self-contained psychological horror bursts into full-blown science fiction in director Dan Trachtenberg's robust debut feature. A young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) awakens after a violent car crash to find herself held captive in a doomsday shelter by a menacing survivalist (John Goodman) and his amiable bunker buddy (John Gallagher Jr), who claim the outside world has been devastated by a chemical attack - or worse. Should she believe them or is the deadly threat merely a ruse to keep her down below? If you've seen Cloverfield, the 2008 monster hit, you may have an inkling about what's going on, but that's not really the point: the film is as much a social allegory piece about differing responses to danger as it is an intense fantasy shocker. The involving scenario will certainly keep you guessing, as the excellent ensemble spars away, making the nasty twists and gory turns riveting to watch.
