Coronation Street

The sort of man who would steal your teeth and come back for your gums, Tony Gordon has been softened by his friendship with Maria. While it's a pity it took murdering her husband to bring them close, let's not dwell on the downsides. Maria certainly isn't. Welcoming into her life the man who once threatened to end it - warning her there was plenty of room in the boneyard beside dead husband Liam and dead baby Paul - Maria is nothing if not forgiving. After all, she needed some flatpack furniture assembled.

With Maria frustrated by waiting for the birth, the pair take a long walk on Crosby beach. And as sure as the tide comes in, the widow Connor goes into labour, with Tony as her midwife. Never let it be said that there's nothing to see at the British seaside. Mind you, sand gets everywhere.

Meanwhile, back on the Street, Hayley and Pam lock horns, Kevin and Molly lock lips, and Rosie locks her sights on Underworld.

EastEnders

Whoever said that life isn't a competition clearly doesn't know the rules. Just as Janine finds a new "frenemy" in Amira, and Denise and Trina have yet another run-in, Heather goes head-to-head with Manda at karaoke.

It's not as if she doesn't have enough on her plate, going to court with Minty to have their marriage annulled and making a momentous decision about her pregnancy. Specifically, to end it.

Elsewhere, it's the grand reopening of the café. Well, "grand" might be overstating it somewhat. This is Ian Beale we're talking about.

Emmerdale

A woman so familiar with devastation that it calls her Di and she calls it Dev, Diane is once again heartbroken as Andy, ever-unravelling, is forced to leave the farm that the Sugdens held so dear.

'Tis the end of an era, to be sure. But Dev has other housecalls to make: not only is there birthday boy Paddy to antagonise and Mark and Natasha to torment, but Lexi also gets a visit from misery.

All this time Carl has been rueing his wife's pregnancy; now, as she's rushed to hospital, it seems he might get what he wants.

Hollyoaks

Proving the adage that wherever you go, you always take your baggage, Newt and Theresa's romantic camping trip goes awry when a stranger helps gooseberry Lauren make a disheartening discovery.

Meanwhile, after an attempt to shrug off her "good girl" image - by getting drunk and snogging anyone with a pulse, including Nancy and Gilly - Hannah announces she's off to Denmark with a rock band. As you do.

The Archers

Mike and Vicky are making arrangements for their wedding, with Bridezilla anxious that her big day should have all the traditional trimmings. So pity poor Brenda, furiously biting her lip on the sidelines and trying not to make it obvious that she thinks her future stepmother is the worst thing to come out of the countryside since foot and mouth.

One person letting her feelings get the better of her is Shula, who gives Usha a piece of mind over the issue of the new occupant at Blossom Hill cottage. These two have been brewing for a showdown for so long, it's just a shame we can't get them both on top of Lynda's plinth and have them fight to the death.

But amid the courtships and contretemps, spare a thought for Lilian, who's without Matt and spiralling into depression. As Brian worries that she's destined for further disappointment if she expects Matt to come calling with declarations of love, he takes decisive action to protect his sister-in-law from herself - and no, it doesn't involve locking the drinks cabinet and cutting her Underwoods loyalty card into tiny pieces.
