If you fancy a walk on the wild side, make a date with this sassy extravaganza from Ryan Murphy, the creative force behind Glee, American Horror Story and Feud: Bette and Joan. Pose is steeped in 1980s New York and begins with a daring raid. But this is far from Martin Scorsese. For knife-wielding gangs, think skid-row fashionistas vogue-dancing in each other’s faces. The raid is staged by the House of Abundance, a bunch of outsiders who filch outré gowns from the Brooklyn Museum to drag up for a ball.
Refreshingly, most of the cast is African-American, the leads are transgender or somewhere on the LGBT waveband. There’s a tad too much swishing and sniping at the start for my taste, but Pose soon settles down and shows us its heart.
