Episode 8: The Azores
Summary
The presenter travels to the Azores islands, a remote archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, to meet Magnus, Lucy and one-year-old Frey. The family live in an off-grid cottage on a steep sloped mountain which Magnus's nomadic father bought in the 1980s, and they have spent the past 15 years taking on the gargantuan task of restoring the property and land
Review
Gill Crawford
The Azores are an archipelago of volcanic islands in the Atlantic, 1,600km off the coast of Portugal. They’re jungle-like, rocky and remote, and hardly the place to bring up a family, but that’s what’s brought Ben Fogle here. He’s meeting Magnus and Lucy (and their children, including baby Frey), who are in the process of renovating a cottage on the side of a mountain on the island of Flores, which was bought by Magnus’s father 40 years ago.
The work is never-ending: they’re off grid and they’re trying to restore the land as well as the property. It’s a wild life, and the couple have had their ups and downs; Fogle probes delicately to the heart of their story, and everyone gets rather emotional.
