Episode 11: Pembrokeshire Coast - Revisit

Summary

The 16th series concludes with Ben returning to Pembrokeshire in west Wales to revisit the Watkinson family. They gave up their careers as vets to live a more environmentally friendly existence on a rugged mountainside on the coast.

An upturned traffic cone doubling as guttering; wine glass holders made from pitchforks… this is the sort of ingenious recycling former vets the Wombling Watkinsons resorted to after going off-grid on the Pembrokeshire coast. “An old skip is now a treasure chest,” says dad Matthew about his passion for making good use of the things that he finds.

This revisit comes merely a year on from Ben’s previous trip and not that much has changed. Even the kids look pretty much the same. But, the son of a vet himself, Ben clearly has heaps of affection for this family, their way of life and their home, which brings a touch of The Mosquito Coast to Wales.

Review

Gary Rose

For the final episode in the series, it’s good to see Ben back in the States, where he gets to know Dee, one of the largely elderly nomads who surf the Arizona desert in their petrol-powered camels. It’s a lifestyle that will strike a familiar chord if you’ve seen the Oscar-winning film Nomadland, with Dee resembling the character played by Frances McDormand.

Dee is a fascinating lady who has led a tough life. But nowadays she is also a digital nomad — a YouTuber called Box Van Dee, with over 18,000 subscribers. “Ben is very down to earth in person,” she replied to me in the comments section. I suspected he might be.
