Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Comedian and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk seems an unlikely choice to play an action hero. However, he's a perfect fit for self-declared nobody Hutch Mansell - a mild-mannered office drone with a breadwinner wife and kids - whose passive reaction to a home invasion leaves his loved ones mightily unimpressed. But beware the quiet man. A bus-ride bust-up with drunken thugs gives an inkling there's more to Hutch's enigmatic past than meets the eye; a past that he urgently needs to draw upon after infuriating a ruthless Russian mobster (McMafia's Alexey Serebryakov). Hardcore Henry director Ilya Naishuller delivers stylish mayhem, while John Wick creator Derek Kolstad's tight, pacey script can't help but recall the Keanu Reeves character. However, Nobody oozes with irony and a sense of its own absurdity, delivered with deadpan aplomb by Odenkirk and especially Christopher Lloyd as Hutch's care home-bound dad, whose "just a bit excessive but glorious" sums up this exhilarating hokum perfectly. There's a fabulous soundtrack, too, with songs like The Impossible Dream, I've Gotta Be Me and You'll Never Walk Alone acting as wry counterpoints to Hutch's energetic exploits.
