It's been a staple part of EastEnders life since the BBC1 soap began in 1985, but it seems that the Bridge Street launderette will close its doors for the final time on Christmas Eve.
Later this month, Dot (June Brown) will be seen breaking the bad news to close friend Patrick (Rudolph Walker), who suggests that she throw a party in there on the final day.
In the early years of the show, Walford stalwart Dot was seen working alongside E20 matriarch Pauline Fowler, and was later joined by the likes of Carol Jackson, Heather Trott and Cora Cross. In recent months, though, Dot has been cutting a more lonely figure among the service washes thanks to her failing eyesight.
A perennial feature of the EastEnders set, the launderette became the scene of high drama back in 2001 when Ashley Cotton died after crashing through the front window on Mark Fowler's motorbike.
And who can forget the 2014 charity calendar that saw both Dot and Kush (Davood Ghadami) strip off for a photoshoot inspired by Nick Kamen's famous 1980s' Levi's ad?
Hopefully, the Albert Square regulars will turn out in force to mourn the passing of the launderette - but if a positive can be salvaged from the situation, then at least everyone now knows what they now need for Christmas: washing machines!
