The Doctor will begin his search for new companion Clara Oswin Oswald this Easter Saturday, 30 March 2013, on BBC1.

The channel announced the news via its Twitter account this morning, posting a picture of Time Lord Matt Smith and his enigmatic companion-to-be, Jenna-Louise Coleman, circled in a TV listing bearing the date.

Coleman's character died at the end of the last episode of Doctor Who, 2012 Christmas special The Snowmen, but the Doctor, who had already encountered her in another form in series seven opener Asylum of the Daleks, vowed to journey through space and time to track her down once again.

Little else is known about the episode, other than that it will be penned by showrunner Steven Moffat,  is directed by Colm McCarthy and kicks off a run of eight instalments that will conclude series seven.

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, with further special programmes and events promised.
