Our Score
The 1977 Broadway hit has suffered an overblown 1982 adaptation, a sickly 1999 TV movie and a terrible stage sequel. But the worst hadn't happened to it until this awkwardly updated, misconceived and sloppy remake. Quvenzhané Wallis from Beasts of the Southern Wild is consistently winning as the afro-haired waif under the foster care of benefits grabbing drunk Cameron Diaz (whose performance is way too broad). But the girl becomes a photo opportunity for the New York mayoral election campaign of cynical billionaire Will Stacks (a merely adequate Jamie Foxx). How Annie and Will help each other find love and family remains the key insight - but only just, under Will Gluck's haphazard direction. The original beloved standards are shredded, sampled and given ineffective pop currency, and attempts to bolster the soundtrack with new songs only underline how great the originals were, while the final third of the film shifts into ludicrous helicopter chase action gear. What a completely wasted opportunity.

A businessman running for mayor of New York saves the life of an orphan, and invites her to live with him as a publicity stunt. The tycoon's cynical nature is chipped away at by the youngster's sunny disposition. Meanwhile, her cruel foster mother hatches a kidnapping plot. Musical remake, starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne.
