Episode 1: No Mum Left Behind

Summary

As the school year begins, a new mum at the gates attracts the attention of Julia, Liz and Kevin, with Amanda telling them she is a high-flying businesswoman with five kids and a sexy husband. Julia is struggling to keep her head above water at work when she is offered the choice of promotion or redundancy. Comedy about the trials and traumas of motherhood, starring Anna Maxwell Martin and Diane Morgan

Review

David Butcher

We’re back in London suburbia for the chaotic but clear-eyed sitcom of middle-class parenting, first shown last year. “No mum left behind!” is the motto of a new alpha-mother in the neighbourhood, but that cuts against the drift of the show, which is based on every mother being – or feeling – very much left behind. And if wimpy Kevin is anything to go by, the dads, too.

For frazzled Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin), each day is a crisis: we rejoin her at back-to-school time trying to find the last pair of regulation black shoes for her daughter and facing a fork in the road at her job. When she’s accused of being unfeminist and hating women she deadpans back, “Nope – I hate everybody.”

That vein of cynicism is the show’s trump card, best embodied by slacker-mum Liz (Diane Morgan). When Julia, Kevin and Liz encounter a force-of-nature newcomer, it makes for a beautifully observed tornado of wrongness.
