Having moved house and packed their children off to university, Lee and Lucy find their lives as frenetic and complicated as ever.

Lee and Lucy make plans to vacate their suburban 'empty nest' property. The pair view a property that Lucy loves when, embarrassingly, Lee needs the toilet. Before he can use it however, a second buyer turns up to take a look at the property. To dissuade him from putting in an offer, Lee pretends to be the vendor. Those who came of age in the 1970s when studio sitcoms were king may still find it hard to credit that such shows are now almost obsolete. Audience laughter has been largely silenced, the multi-camera set-up jettisoned in favour of naturalism.

Yet Not Going Out remains a rare defiant outlier, with a new run beginning tonight and a further series commissioned for 2026. Why has it endured? Partly because Lee Mack is so conscious that his creation is such an anomaly that he gives us no option but to crease up. Honestly, the joke rate is so machine-gun rapid we barely notice our reaction being mirrored on what many now consider an outmoded laugh track.

What’s also still impressive, though, is the precision of the plotting. This opener is, on the surface, a simple concept, with Lee and Lucy seeking to buy a new home following the flight of their kids. But the task necessitates Mack, co-star Sally Bretton and guest actor Mike Wozniak skilfully and gleefully employing every subterfuge in the playbook of farce during an increasingly fraught house viewing.
