Episode 1: Stephen Fry

Summary

Stephen Fry faces a grilling from a cast of autistic and learning-disabled interviewers. Did he take drugs in Buckingham Palace? Is he happy to be alive? As the questions come thick and fast, Stephen opens up about mental health, shame and self-criticism. There are probing questions about love, identity and belief, alongside moments of pure mischief and laughter - including an explosive question about his sexual preferences

Review

David Butcher

In theory, the celebrities who agree to be interviewed on this radical reinvention of the chat show should know how it works by now. It’s a no-holds-barred set-up: the neurodiverse people questioning guests won’t pull their punches. Nonetheless, Stephen Fry, who appears in the first episode of a new series, admits to having been taken aback that the punches that were not pulled included some “eye-watering” queries regarding not just his sexuality, but his specific sexual preferences. You don’t get that from Claudia Winkleman.

Still, Fry appreciated “the frankness, the openness, the genuine curiosity”, none of which are a given in your average press call. The episode wasn’t available to preview, but we know from the first series that the show’s dynamic sparks surprises. In this case, that means a rare sight: Fry up on his feet, dancing. A second episode, featuring Nicola Sturgeon, airs on Friday.
