Summary

The past leaves deep scratch marks in the present in a tense six-part psychological thriller directed by Borkur Sigthorsson, adapted for the screen by novelist Sarah Pinborough from her 2022 book of the same title. Successful lawyer Emma (Vicky McClure) is terrified that she is destined to suffer the same fate as her mother and experience a violent psychotic breakdown on her 40th birthday as a result of inherited 'bad blood'. A couple of weeks before the milestone, Emma stops sleeping and the other's world begins to unravel, straining her relationship with her husband Robert (Tom Cullen) and two children, Chloe (India Fowler) and Will (Smylie Bradwell). A lack of rest also negatively impacts her ability to work effectively. As her mental state fractures, Emma resolves to confront her family history to prevent tragedy striking successive generations

Jack Seale

Emma (Vicky McClure) can’t sleep. She’s a mother of two and a high-flying lawyer with a lovely house and a caring husband (Tom Cullen), but she’s about to turn 40 and, as her estranged, mentally ill mother lies dying in hospital, Emma is plagued by visions of her deeply disturbing childhood. Then she starts sleepwalking…

What is so far a rather slim story (readers of the Sarah Pinborough novel will know it gets weirder, later) is slowly squeezed for every scant drop of psychological-thriller atmosphere.
