Episode 1: Gathering the Flock

Summary

May 1945, and things look very different at Skeldale House as James is struggling with a wild and chaotic Siegfried. When Tristan returns from war and is shocked to see the shift in his brother, he and James decide to take action. But there's also some good news around the corner for everyone

Review

David Brown

It’s now May 1945, a notable date as Germany is about to surrender and the process of demobilisation begin. However, rather than being discharged, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) is instead facing conscription. Not to the postwar effort, mind you, but rather to the task of getting Skeldale House in order, a job that would give even Mary Poppins a fit of the vapours.

Because in the period since the last episode aired at Christmas, things have been a little chaotic. Mrs H has been away from town and, judging by the state of the place, you’d suspect that a doodlebug had landed in the kitchen in her absence.

Even Tristan (Callum Woodhouse), someone who’s never had the most disciplined of dispositions, can’t believe what he’s witnessing after arriving home from his posting in Italy — hence he and James (Nicholas Ralph) deciding to call on Mrs Hall and entice her home. It’s a turn of events that will please anyone who feels that the housekeeper is the one truly indispensable person at the veterinary practice.
