Summary
Almost three decades after the sports comedy Happy Gilmore directed by Dennis Dugan, a raucous sequel welcomes back Adam Sandler to reprise his role as the unlucky ice hockey player, who discovers his calling on the golf fairway. In a neat twist, his real-life teenage daughter, Sunny Sandler, who starred with him in You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah once again plays his on-screen offspring. It has been 29 years since Happy stunned his doubters (and even himself) by winning his first Tour Championship and he is devoted to his daughter Vienna. He reluctantly comes out of retirement to discover his golfing heyday with support from his caddy Oscar (Bad Bunny) so he can afford to pay the 75000 US dollar per annum tuition fees for Vienna's ballet school. An unlikely comeback puts him on a collision course with arrogant star golfer Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), who lost to Happy on the 18th hole all those years ago

Adam Sandler returns to one of his most beloved characters in this play-it-safe comedy sequel. Three decades on, the titular golfer is now a boozy father of five who hasn't picked up a club in years after a tragic golfing accident killed his wife. In need of funds for his daughter's college fees, he gets back on the green, his skills anything but sharp. But as Benny Safdie's slimy promoter looks to create a controversial breakaway league, Happy must find his game and play for the integrity of the sport. Sandler is in his happy place, you might say, playing Gilmore, a character he is more than comfortable inhabiting. It makes for a rather predictable, cosy experience, hardly lifted by multiple, nostalgia-signalling callbacks to the 1996 original and a proliferation of golfer cameos, including a very wooden Rory McIlroy. But there are some enjoyable moments, like Eminem playing the son of an old nemesis, and Ben Stiller returning as an odious rehab guru. Intermittently funny, it's the movie equivalent of making par.
