This remarkable, mostly animated Danish documentary recounts the personal struggle of a gay Afghan refugee, still tormented by his past decades after arriving in Copenhagen as a child. Based on interviews conducted by writer/director Jonas Poher Rasmussen with a former school friend, Amin (names and locations changed for protection), it describes Amin's decimated family's escape from Kabul during the 1989 civil war. They survive a grim holding-pattern existence in Russia, a disastrous attempt to get to a brother in Sweden via crooked human traffickers and a dismal Estonian asylum centre before final rescue. The movie is a mix of entrancing hand-drawn animation and sober archival news footage that in galvanising style and execution boldly redefines what a documentary can be and the emotional rewards it can achieve.
