A fashion model celebrity couple join an eventful cruise for the super-rich. Comedy drama, starring Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean
A luxury cruise populated by the super-rich proves fertile ground for director Ruben Ostlund with this barbed satire. The ship's motley bunch of passengers includes a Russian oligarch, a pair of unlikely weapon manufacturers, and a model couple (Charlbi Dean and Harris Dickinson) who are on board to expand their brand. Woody Harrelson is the Marxism-spouting skipper who has dinner with his paymasters, which then erupts into farcical, scatological chaos. Like Ostlund's other Palme d'Or winner, 2017's The Square, this is a captivatingly caustic comedy. Wealth, privilege and the fashion industry receive typically tart treatment, and Ostlund broadens his scope to also put capitalism, class hierarchy and gender dynamics under the microscope. At over two hours, the film is on the lengthy side, but it is every bit as ambitious and bracingly entertaining as you'd expect from the Swedish film-maker.
