It appears we might have got a little bit carried away, Downton Abbey fans.
Lesley Nicol, who plays the Crawley’s cook Mrs Patmore in the hit ITV series, got us all excited last weekend when she said, “There aren’t any plans for any big characters to die this year.”
But asked whether Nicol was right, Julian Fellowes, who has penned every episode of the period drama, ominously told The Telegraph: “You see, I only finished the last script on Tuesday.”
(We imagine he then cackled like a pantomime villain.)
So, although we can probably assume no one has died during filming so far (unless Nicol’s words were all an elaborate ruse to lull us into a false sense of security), the cast still don’t know all that is in store for the residents of the Abbey in series five.
And that might include the deadly demise of ANY of them.
Because, after Sybil, Matthew, William, Lavinia, Pamuk and co, we know Fellowes isn’t afraid of a little bloodshed.
Downton Abbey series five will return to ITV later this year
