Summary

Jamie Oliver is on the campaign trail. Not about turkey twizzlers this time but how our education system is failing the 10—15 per cent of children in every class who are dyslexic. Just as he did when he was young, he discovers they find it hard to fit in, feel stupid and often get into trouble or even expelled.
It’s not just about a few kids struggling to read, he says, pointing out that, while there are many successful people with dyslexia, crime is often an easier option than traditional employment. A staggering 50 per cent of prison inmates are dyslexic. Schools need to offer a more inclusive education and test for neurodiversity earlier, so all children thrive rather than survive.
Jamie is demanding the Government changes the education system because, he argues, if we look after our neurodiverse kids properly, everyone in society benefits. “I believe school is on the front line of hope, optimism and a better, cooler, happier, more productive Britain,” he says. It’s hard to disagree with him.
