Review

David Butcher

This crime saga opens with a horrific death scene and it doesn’t lighten up much from there. Yes, we expect thrillers to be violent but, trust me, this has scenes that could strip the plasma off your screen, including a fight involving a meat cleaver and a mattress I won’t forget in a hurry.

Bear that health warning in mind and you’ll be fine: it’s a classy, cool, richly cast drama about a crime family thrown into chaos when its patriarch is killed. Son Sean (Joe Cole from Peaky Blinders) is set on revenge and as an Albanian rival notes, “A boy like him could burn cities to convince the world he’s a man.”

As we get to know the extended family and its associates, the standout is footsoldier Elliot (brilliant Sope Dirisu), a “washed- up squaddie” whose skills are established via a pub fight where he takes out eight Albanians. With one dart.
