Summary

Archie butts heads with charming paediatric locum registrar Will Noble when they meet in the car park. Will reconnects with old university friend Ethan and ingratiates himself with the staff by treating them to coffees and getting to know them. Archie is not fooled by his charm offensive and keeps a close eye on Will. Elsewhere, Jade learns she's passed her exams by the skin of her teeth, and Gem thanks Jan and Ruby for their help

Another week, another new arrival – this time, it’s emergency locum Dr Will Noble (played by Red Rock actor Jack Nolan). He’s unflappable, borderline glib and has a live-in-the-moment attitude, but underneath it all, I suspect he cares more for the patients than he’d like to admit. There are a couple of occasions when a full-time consultant’s job gets mentioned in his presence and, while Will claims this wouldn’t suit his lifestyle, I doubt the show would devote this much screen time to a here-today-gone-tomorrow character.

Someone who’s definitely not keeping his cool is Charlie. That trademark grandfatherly concern has vanished – in its place: rag-losing rage. This is all down to his concerns about Duffy’s health. Not that his staff know this. They just think he’s having a Falling Down moment when he vents his spleen at Jade after she gives him some mild workplace cheek. “You are one of the most mediocre, lazy nurses that I’ve ever had the misfortune to work with,” he snarls. In 33 years of Casualty, has Charlie ever been so barbed?
