Episode 1: Guy Martin: Top Gun
Summary
Guy Martin trains to fly a classic frontline fighter jet, and builds a jet engine in his shed in a single day to gain an understanding of the technology's original creator, maverick British genius Sir Frank Whittle. With jet travel being a major contributor to climate change, Guy looks for less damaging alternatives, before he heads off to the Swiss Alps and his final mission - to fly a fighter jet through the mountains
Review
David Butcher
“The fastest thing I’ve ever been in or on,” is how Guy Martin describes the 550mph de Havilland Vampire, one of the earliest fighter jets and a futuristic marvel of 1940s engineering. Guy has flown propellor planes before, but needs to learn new skills so that he can, he hopes, take a Vampire for a spin over the Alps. But first he teaches us about the brilliant simplicity of jet propulsion by making his own jet engine — in a day! — and learns how the engine’s inventor, Frank Whittle, had his idea rejected by the Air Ministry in 1929, surely one of the great what ifs of history. And veteran 1940s pilots (including Frederick Forsyth) recall their first experience of flying fighter jet.
