There’s kidnapping, torture, chainsaws and murder galore in Rihanna’s new video for single Bitch Better Have my Money – or BBHMM if you really know your RiRi.
It’s truly violent stuff, especially for a singer who started out with nice songs about DJs on the beach (Pon De Replay, anyone?). The video’s plot revolves around a kidnapper who gets her money back by killing (yes, with a chainsaw) a very wealthy woman with a tiny dog.
Whether you think the video goes too far or not, the undeniably great thing about it is that it features Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen, the Danish actor who has been by far the main draw for fans of the NBC thriller.
As the steel-eyed cannibal in the drama series, Danish actor Mikkelsen is ridiculously charming while being very creepy indeed. But even if he wasn’t in the video, BBHMMB plays out a lot like a Hannibal episode, with a calculated murder that produces a colossal volume of blood.
In particular, it brings to mind the first season of the show in which a woman’s body is impaled on deer antlers. Or the time that a couple are skinned and turned into guardian angels. Yeah, any of those very grisly scenes.
But of course, in Rihanna’s video Mikkelsen’s character is the murdered rather than the murderer. As you watch the music video, you can almost feel Hugh Dancy’s criminal profiler Will Graham trying to work out why and how Rihanna’s character got so violent.
And the links between RiRi and Hannibal are strengthened by fans of the thriller pointing out that if the pop star wants Mikkelsen in her video, why don’t NBC want anymore Hannibal? After the show was cancelled last week, 73,541 Fannibals signed a petition to get the show back on air.
And now some are joking that Rihanna might be the show’s saviour…
